The Importance of the Right Auto Insurance

Auto InsuranceEveryone who has a vehicle registered in the state of Nevada must carry auto insurance. If you do not have auto insurance for as little as one day the Department of Motor Vehicles can fine you $250. The fines can be as high as $1750.

Not all auto insurance coverage is the same. Just because somebody tells you that you have “Full Coverage” doesn’t mean that you are Fully Covered. The state minimum for liability insurance in the state of Nevada is 15/30/10 or $15,000 per person / $30,000 per accident and $10,000 property damage. What this means is if you have an auto accident that is your fault, your insurance will pay the other party up to $15,000 per person and up to $30,000 for the entire accident as well as up to $10,000 in property damage.

Now let’s just assume you are driving on the freeway and the person in front of you slams on his brakes because traffic suddenly comes to a stop and you slam into to him at 30 mph which causes a chain reaction collision with two other vehicles in front of him as well. The person in front of you who you hit had 3 passengers in his vehicle who are all waiting for an ambulance to show up because they have back and neck injuries as well as the people in the two other cars.

All three vehicles are also heavily damaged. And wouldn’t you know it there is a billboard right there on the side of the freeway from a personal injury attorney advertising “In a Wreck…..?” You are about to be sued by at least 5 people for injuries, damage to their vehicles, lost time at work, and of course hefty attorney’s fees. Do you think that 15/30/10 coverage is going to cover all of that? Of course not! But you are still going to be sued for all of the damages you incurred to all of these people. Your current auto insurance will offer to pay your policy limits of $30,000 for injuries and $10,000 of property damage but you will be responsible for the rest of the expenses yourself.

So I’m sure your thinking, “Well I don’t have any money or assets so good luck getting anything from me” Just because you don’t have anything doesn’t mean a settlement can’t be put against you and you would still owe that money. You could have your wages garnished and any assets you obtain in the future could be subject to the settlement against you.

It really is not that much more money to have adequate auto insurance limits such as 100/300/ 100 which would most likely cover you entirely in the situation that was explained above.
